For the first time in its near 100 year history, the Urdd Eisteddfod will be held in Newport in 2027.

It was confirmed by youth organisation in a public meeting of volunteers and supporters at Ysgol Gwent Is Coed on Thursday.

Preparations are already underway for Neath Port Talbot to host next year, before the event makes its way to Anglesey in 2026, eventually reaching Newport in 2027.

The youth celebration of the Welsh language includes competitions in music, literature and dance for eight to 25-year-olds.

Site locations are currently being discussed with Newport City Council.

Newport city councillor Emma Stowell-Corten called it "a great opportunity" that could leave "a positive legacy for generations to come".

“We’re keen to involve as many businesses and community groups, both in the city centre and across Newport, as possible in the celebrations, so that everyone can experience the buzz of a major cultural event," she added.

The Urdd Eisteddfod travels around Wales each year, and was held in Maldwyn, Powys, this year.

Its Arts and Eisteddfod Director Llio Maddocks said: "One of the most important elements of Eisteddfod yr Urdd is the fact that it’s a travelling festival and therefore visits areas that have never hosted the festival before."

What is the Urdd Eisteddfod?

The Urdd Eisteddfod is an annual event for young people aged between eight and 25 to compete in events including music, literature and performing arts.

The festival usually coincides with the spring half term and is organised by Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Wales’ largest youth movement.

The Urdd's organisers said more than 100,000 people registered to compete at the 2024 Urdd Eisteddfod - the highest number in the event's history.

Next year, Eisteddfod yr Urdd will be held in Margam Park in Neath Port Talbot between 26 May and 31 May.

The festival will then move to Anglesey in 2026, before visiting Newport, Gwent region in 2027.
