Man injured after two cars crash into fallen tree
A driver suffered life-threatening injuries after two cars crashed into a fallen tree.
A BMW and Volkswagen separately crashed into the tree on Fisher Lane in Cramlington, Northumberland, on Monday morning.
The 26-year-old BMW driver was seriously hurt and remains in hospital in a critical condition, Northumbria Police said.
The road remained closed on Tuesday and police said it was expected to stay shut further into the week.
The force said the injured man's next of kin had been informed and were being supported by specially-trained officers.
The Volkswagen driver was not injured, police said.
The crash happened at about 06:55 GMT on Monday on the A1068, before the Foxton Mill roundabout.
The North East Ambulance Service said it sent two ambulance crews, one clinical team leader and two Hazardous Area Response Team crews to the crash.
It added two patients had been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
Police are investigating the crash and witnesses are being asked to come forward.
