A man who "routinely" raped a woman while she was asleep and intoxicated before sending apologetic texts which he later denied were admissions of guilt has been jailed.

Joseph Yuen of Bury, Greater Manchester, was reported in January 2021 after the victim went to police.

Officers found text messages between Yuen and the woman, in which he had "made incriminating admissions" and apologised for what he did.

The 30-year-old, of Bournville Drive, was found guilty of two counts of rape and jailed for 10 years at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

Yuen's offending took place in the months before January 2021, Greater Manchester Police said.

'Courage'

He raped the woman "often when she was intoxicated and woke up to the offence taking place", the court heard.

A police spokeswoman thanked the woman for coming forward and praised her courage.

"Yuen was arrested not long after," she added.

"Yuen denied all the offences put to him and accepted making the apologetic texts, but stated these were not actual admissions of guilt.

鈥淭his sentencing should provide the victim with some closure that Yuen is behind bars.鈥
