Warnings have gone out to people in Cornwall following a large increase in rogue roofers.
Trading Standards officers said they have seen a spike in the number of rogue traders claiming to be local and giving false addresses.
The traders increase their prices after starting the job, often produce poor work and leave the work unfinished.
Advice from Trading Standards is to secure a detailed, written quote and check whether the firm has been vetted on Cornwall Council's website.
In partnership with Devon and Cornwall Police, Trading Standards officers said many rogue traders are now using online directory services or social media and have moved away from 鈥榯raditional鈥 cold-calling.
They advised people to get a quote which has details including what work is needed, the cost of materials and the time-frame for the project.
People agreeing works over the phone or at home have the legal right to cancel the contract within 14 days of that agreement, they added.
