The council says the road will be closed until further notice

A road, which only reopened in May after being shut for two and a half years, has been forced to close again due to "significant rockfall".

Cumberland Council said it had put an emergency closure on West Road in Thirlmere, Cumbria, between Launchy Gill and Rough Crag.

The road was previously shut between November 2021 and May due to an "unacceptably high risk" of rock and tree falls at Rough Crag.

The local authority said rockfall at Rough Crag had again caused the road to be closed "until further notice" and motorists should avoid the area.

The council also said a diversion route along the A591 had been put in place and it would provide more updates "as soon as possible".

The road was forced to "temporarily" close in November 2021 following Storm Arwen. It was not reopened until 21 May.
