A man described by police as a "prolific shoplifter" has been banned from 10 shops and a retail park for three years.

Christopher Russell from Crewe, who is also known as Christopher Sedgley, was jailed for 14 days and issued with a criminal behaviour order by magistrates in Chester on Monday.

The 39-year-old, of no fixed abode, is not allowed into certain shops in Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach, Tarporley, Shavington and Stapeley, nor must he enter a retail park in Crewe.

Failure to comply with the order could result in a recall to prison or a fine, warned Cheshire Police.

"Christopher Russell is a prolific offender and he has targeted businesses across Crewe and its surrounding areas for a considerable amount of time," said Sgt Jay Burns, who was "thankful" a criminal behaviour order was now in place.

He is banned from six Co-op shops in Crewe, Sandbach, Stapeley, Shavington and Tarporley.

In addition, he cannot enter Waitrose in Sandbach, Sainsbury's and Morrisons in Nantwich, the Post Office on North Street, Crewe, and Grand Junction Retail Park, Crewe.

The order also bans Russell from using threatening and abusive language and behaviour in a public place.
