A Cornish garden waste composting centre has been closed after a fire broke out.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said it was managing a "large fire involving green waste" at the Greenspot green waste centre at Higher Kergilliack Farm, near Falmouth.

The Environment Agency said it had told the site to stop accepting waste because of the fire, which has been burning for several days.

"At present, we have not identified any impacts to the water environment and are investigating any potential breaches in environmental legislation," said a spokesperson.

The fire service said: "As there will be varying smoke levels for some time, residents may want to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution - particularly individuals with conditions like asthma."

The service said it was working with "partner agencies to minimise the impact to residents and the environment".
