Two men have been taken to hospital with injuries after a van crashed into the back of a lorry and shut a motorway for several hours.

Emergency services were called to the M40 northbound between junction 12 near Gaydon and junction 14 near Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, just before 03:00 BST on Wednesday.

The northbound carriageway was closed following the crash, with drivers advised to avoid the area and to follow diversions.

The driver and the passenger of the van, a white Ford, were both taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

A spokesperson added the passenger was in a serious condition and had received advanced life support at the scene, with the driver treated for injuries not believed to be serious.

Warwickshire Police said the two men had to be freed by firefighters after becoming trapped in the vehicle.

In a post on X, National Highways confirmed the at about 10:20.
