School lockdown amid air weapon fears

A school went into lockdown after reports of teens brandishing air weapons nearby.

Staff at King James I in Bishop Auckland called police at about 13:00 BST on Friday to report sightings of two teenagers armed with air weapons in the field behind the school buildings.

Lockdown procedures were put in place while officers conducted a search, but no trace of anyone was found.

The school has been contacted for comment.

A spokesman for Durham Police said: "The school instituted procedures to safeguard pupils and officers attended to carry out a search of the area.

"Police carried out an extensive search but found no trace of the youths and informed the school."
