Police in standoff at petrol station

Police have been caught in a standoff at a petrol station, with reports of a man barricaded inside.

A video circulating online appeared to show items being thrown through a window at the Esso garage on St Cuthbert鈥檚 Way in Newton Aycliffe.

At about 19:00 GMT, a spokesman for Durham Constabulary said the road was likely to remain closed 鈥渇or some time鈥, with drivers advised to find an alternative route.

The Esso garage sits on one of the main routes out of Newton Aycliffe town centre.

Traffic came to a standstill as police cordoned off the road around the garage.
