Trial begins of man accused of woman's murder
The trial of a man accused of a woman's murder has begun.
Paul Irwin, of George Street, Whitehaven, denies murdering 34-year-old Tiffany Render on 22 March.
The 50-year-old is also accused of sexually assaulting Miss Render on the same date.
A jury of 10 women and two men has been sworn in at Carlisle Crown Court for the trial which is expected to last for two weeks.
Addressing jurors trial judge, Mrs Justice Foster, said: 鈥淚t is very important, whatever your reaction, that you remain objective and dispassionate during this trial.
鈥淐ases are not decided on emotion. They are decided by a calm and measured assessment of the evidence."
The prosecution opening speech is due to be given by Iain Simkin KC on Wednesday.
