An England rugby player has been given the freedom of the borough in recognition of her career.

Alex Matthews, who represented Great Britain in rugby sevens at the 2020 Olympics, was among six individuals and organisations given the honour by Surrey Heath Borough Council on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old World Cup-winner, who is originally from Camberley, has picked up 72 test caps for England throughout her career.

Mayor Sarbie Kang said: 鈥淭he freedom of the borough is the highest civic recognition we can bestow and it is my great privilege to confer this honour."

The honour was also given to local charity Camberley Care, Surrey Heath Local History Club treasurer Ken Clarke, Camberley Alzheimer's Caf茅 founder Maureen Hume, founder of Chloe's and Sophie's Special Ears Fund Charity Karen Jackson, and former head teacher Mary Keys.

Ms Kang said: 鈥淭heir impact on our borough is lasting and profound, reminding us all of the power of community and selfless service as we look toward a bright future together.鈥
