Human remains have been found during building works at a city centre car park.

Dundee City Council confirmed the discovery was made at the multi-storey building on Bell Street, which is currently being transformed into a green travel hub.

The car park, next to Abertay University, was built in the 1970s on the site of the former New Howff graveyard.

It is understood the remains have been removed from the site and will be reinterred.

The burial ground was in use between 1836 before being closed by the council in 1871.

Interments continued for relatives who had family graves at the site until 1938.

But in the 1960s permission was granted to turn the site into a car park.

The Courier newspaper reported that during this process.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: "The council and contractors are aware that the site is a former graveyard and have made the appropriate arrangements should any human remains become uncovered during the project.

"Any remains would be stored appropriately and reinterred at an agreed location at another cemetery in due course."
