A fourth person has been convicted for their part in rioting in Sunderland.

Bradley Makin, of Simonside Road, Springwell, Sunderland, appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court where he pleaded guilty to violent disorder.

He also pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine and heroin during Friday's unrest.

The 21-year-old was remanded in custody for sentencing at Newcastle Crown Court on 9 August.

His conviction follows similar guilty pleas by Leanne Hodgson, 43, Josh Kellett, 29, and Andrew Smith, 41.

They will be also sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court on 9 August.

Det Ch Insp Graeme Barr, from Northumbria Police, said the force would "not tolerate the behaviour seen in Sunderland city centre on Friday".

"If you were involved in the violent scenes, it may well be your door that we turn up to next," he said.

"As a force, we are prepared to use every tactic available to us to ensure those involved have their day in court."
