A busy road through a Lincolnshire town will be rebuilt because it is "starting to fail".

Major roadworks on the A153 in Horncastle will begin on 5 August and are likely to take six weeks, Lincolnshire County Council said.

Councillor Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: "This won鈥檛 be a small feat. We鈥檒l need to first excavate all of the current carriageway before using roughly 6,000 tonnes of material to fully reconstruct it.鈥

The project will focus on a one-mile stretch between the Wolds Wildlife Park and Conging Street, including a 400m (1,300ft) section of Hemingby Lane.

During the work, most of the road will be closed on weekday nights between 18:00 and 01:00 BST. However, the section around Hemingby Lane will be closed between 19:00 and 06:00.

Work in residential areas will end at 23:00 to reduce noise.

Councillor William Gray, who represents Horncastle, said the improvements would be "very welcome" as the road was "much in need of repair".

鈥淎lthough there will be some disruption while the works are under way, it will be worth it in the end for smoother, safer journeys,鈥 he added.
