A man’s death after he was arrested and held in custody in Surrey is being investigated by the police watchdog.

Ben Campfield, 46, died in hospital on 29 July, three days after he was found unresponsive in custody after an apparent medical episode, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said.

IOPC investigators have secured CCTV footage from Salfords Custody Suite, in Salfords, near Redhill, and are reviewing custody logs and will be obtaining statements from staff involved.

Surrey Police said Mr Campfield was given immediate first aid and taken to hospital for treatment, but his condition deteriorated.

IOPC investigators said Mr Campfield had been arrested by officers on 24 July in Epsom and taken to hospital with reportedly self-inflicted injuries.

They said he was discharged the same day and taken into custody to await a court appearance, after being charged and remanded, but was found unconscious in his cell on 26 July.

CPR was given and an ambulance called, but Mr Campfield later died in hospital.

A post-mortem has taken place, and further tests are being carried out.

Regional director Mel Palmer said: “Our thoughts are with Mr Campfield’s family and friends, and all those affected by his death. We have been in contact with the family to explain our role and advise them of the next steps.

“When someone has died after being taken into police custody, it is important that all the circumstances are independently and impartially examined.”

The investigation began following a mandatory referral from Surrey Police.

Surrey Police Ch Supt Clive Davies said: "Colleagues from Surrey Police and the NHS worked hard to try to save Mr Campfield’s life.

"It is very sad for everyone involved, especially family and friends, and we are co-operating fully with the IOPC investigation process.”
