Ahead of World Radio Day, we're celebrating projects where radio is empowering communities on the frontline of climate change.
Oliver Mukampaila, a maize farmer in Monze, Zambia, is celebrating a successful harvest. Despite the terrible drought, he was confident in his crop because of the weather and climate change advice he heard on the radio. Farmers, like Oliver, can access accurate, solutions-focused weather and climate information on the radio thanks to the training we provide to local radio broadcasters and journalists.
The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ World Service's Fifth Floor podcast spoke to Boyd Chibale from our Zambia team about our work to help communities in the country cope with droughts. Our team is working with local radio stations to help people like Oliver understand climate change and find ways to adapt. More than 80% of the population of Zambia is affected by the drought – that's around 9 million people. We work with local partners to ensure communities get lifesaving information to help them become more resilient to these challenges.
