African sounds

Schoolchildren brought Ilford Central Library alive to the beat of African drums helping to dispel the myth that all learning in libraries must be done silence.

More than 400 children from six primary schools across the borough took part in the interactive African workshop.

Music artists George Fiawoo and Emmanual Okine from Music for Change encouraged children to take part in the session which involved traditional African music and song.

The children were also given a crash course in circus acrobatics, trying their hand at plate spinning and juggling to the sound of some customary Ghanaian songs.

The aim of the day, part of the borough's programme of events for 'Make a Difference Week', was to promote cultural awareness and encourage storytelling through music and challenge perceptions that libraries are quiet places.
