Black History Month

Now in its 22nd year, Black History Month recognises Black heritage and culture and celebrates the contributions of the Capital's diverse ethnic minority communities on London life.

From music and dance to art, history and even sports, hundreds of events will be taking place across London which will explore how Black and Asian communities have shaped the city we live in.

Highlights in Redbridge

In Redbridge, highlights include a chance to try your hand at African drumming, woodcarving and mosaic making at Forest Farm Peace Garden, Hazelbrouk Gardens on Sunday, October 12th.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy a performance of Ethiopian music by The Genna Traditional Band and a free freshly harvested hot lunch prepared in the garden.

The music continues on Thursday, October 30th when families can join in with the magical Trinidadian Calypso singer Alexander D Great for songs to celebrate Caribbean culture.

This event at the Central Library in Ilford will mark the 60th anniversary arrival of the ship SS Empire Windrush, the ship that brought the first West Indian workers to settle in Britain.

Residents who prefer the written word can catch author Bernadine Evaristo on Thursday, October 16th who will talk about 'Blond Roots' her brand new novel about the Slave Trade at South Woodford Library, Woodford.

Times journalist Sathnam Sanghera will also be holding an talk about his memoirs 'If You Don't Know Me By Now: A Memoir of Love, Secrets and Lies in Wolverhampton' on Wednesday, October 15th at Ilford Central Library.

Waltham Forest events

In Waltham Forest, join in with 3D African mask making and story workshop with Josephine Regis on Sunday October 5th the Vestry House Museum. Visitors will be given the chance to explore the history and meaning of masks in African culture and the significance of the artistic details of original mask design.

On Saturday October 11th and 12th, Walthamstow Town Centre will听 host a African Showcase Market with over 25 stalls selling everything from arts and crafts to textiles accompanied by music and food from the African sub-continent.

Or discover the history of the Black community in Leyton by joining in a walk with historian Peter Ashen who explore where migrants first settled in the borough. The walk begins at Leyton Library at mid-day on Saturday October 11th.
