London's best cycling photos revealed

This summer Transport for London has been running a photo competition for cyclists. Here, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ London reveals the eight winning pictures and what inspired the photgraphers to take them.

Alexandra Manea

Overall Winner: Alexandra Manea (above)

Location: Chalk Farm

Alexandra: I was passing by Chalk Farm on the way to buy one of my favourite ice creams in London (Marine ices). IÌýsaw the street art on the wall and I thought it would make a great photo butÌýI felt I needed some sort of interaction with a passer by.ÌýI waited till, finally, a cyclist came along. It was great howÌýhe noticed the work on the wall and had time to look at it,Ìýso I was able to capture the perfect moment. I am sure all the cars driving by could never have noticed it. London is such a great city and has so much to offer, the best way to enjoy it is by walking or cycling around.

Roh Hathlia

City Winner: Roh Hathlia (right)

Location: South Bank, opposite St. Paul's

Roh: I take pictures quite regularly along the South Bank, but had avoided taking one of St Paul's as there are already so many images of it.

Then I chanced upon this solitary bike parked to the rail and instantly knew that it was going to make a good image.

Even the title for the photo came to me before I took the shot.

I wanted to capture the tranquility of the river and I think in some way it was achieved.

North East Winner: Michael Crossley (below)

Michael Crossley

Location: Clerkenwell

Michael: Cycling around London and sometimes lifting my head away from the traffic can be beneficial. I spotted these two London tube carriages on my two wheeled travels somewhere around Clerkenwell.

Suke Driver

East Winner: Suke Driver (left)

Location: Limehouse

Suke: This is one of my favourite tunnels between Limehouse and Bethnal green on the Regents Canal, part of my daily cycle route to and from work.

Going through canal tunnels, it is essential to have a bell and this is why it is also in the picture.

Richard Butler

South East Winner: Richard Butler (right)

Location: City Hall

Richard: I keep thinking that we have not had a summer this year but, looking back at my photos, that does not appear to be true.

I can also remember trying to carry furniture up four flights of stairs to my new flat on an incredibly hot day.

And they turned the fountains on outside City Hall, so it must have been warm at some stage.

Phil Cohat

South West Winner: Phil Cohat (left)

Location: Syon Park

Phil: This photograph really sums up how I was feeling when I took it on a beautiful summer's evening...

...The sense of happiness and freedom which I think comes with cycling.

West Winner: Oliver Blaiklock (below)

Oliver Blaiklock

Location: Walpole Park, Ealing

Oliver: I was cycling in Walpole Park when a thunderstorm broke and there was torrential downpour of rain. After the rain had stopped and the sky had cleared, my eye was caught by this reflection in a nearby puddle. Luckily I had my camera with me and I was able to take a picture of it before cycling home.

Tom de Gay

West Central Winner: Tom de Gay (right)

Location: Kensington

Tom: Cycling opens up a whole new London, the patchwork side streets revealing the city's more reticent character.

This is my partner, Keiko, in Queen’s Gate Mews, South Kensington.

It was the end of summer and the end of a long day exploring; time for the long ride home.

Judges Comments:

Commenting on the competition, Peter McBride from Transport for London said: "We had a great response to the competition and it was a difficult job to choose between so many inspiring and creative photographs. The winning entries illustrate perfectly what a rich and diverse city we live in – and what a great city it is to explore by bike.Ìý Many thanks for everyone who shared their photographs with us."
