Congestion on the roads

Congestion on the roads

Easing traffic in Sidcup

Removing traffic lights and building a new roundabout - but will it solve congestion on the busiest roads in one Bexley neighbourhood?

Councillors in Bexley are hoping a 拢1 million investment to help manage the flow of traffic will help solve congestion and reduce jams in Sidcup.

Proposals released this week, reveal plans to remove traffic lights and redesign a key junction.

The plans follow a lengthy consultation with residents and businesses in the area, and focuses on Elm Road and roads surrounding the train station.

6,000 Leaflets

Cllr Peter Craske who oversees transport issues in the borough says he's "approached this project by looking at all of Sidcup strategically, instead of just in little pockets."

The consultation process began in 2006, with a number of public meetings designed to gauge local thoughts on how to ease traffic.

Six thousand leaflets were delivered to residents and local businesses in an attempt to get feedback on the proposed changes.

One way system?

A mini-roundabout will be introduced on Elm Road at the junction for the supermarket and car parks. Two sets of traffic lights will also disappear - allowing a better flow of traffic.

Options that were previously under consideration included introducing a one way system on the High Street.

Sidcup Ward Cllr, June Slaughter said she was "delighted that a solution to the traffic issues" had been agreed. "This is something that will really help the residents and businesses in the whole area."
