But to paraphrase an age old adage, if you can't get the students to the mountain, then you must bring the mountain to the students.
Help playing audio/video Through the magic of film and the expertise of Theatre Venture, the children of Portway Primary have learnt some of the tricks of the filmmaking trade. Portway is just one of the schools across the borough involved in Citizens 2012. Others include: Primary Schools Secondary Schools Citizens 2012 has been devised and coordinated by Theatre Venture as part of the Creating 2012 Citizens Project run by the PSHE department of Newham鈥檚 Children鈥檚 & Young People鈥檚 Services.听 Using the internet, Newham students have been sharing their thoughts on citizenship, through the exploration of the ideals of the Olympics, with their peers in Ireland, Pakistan, Nepal and Australia. All these experiences and new ideas were made into fun and insightful short films showing students inventing new sports for the Olympics, sharing their dreams for the future, imagining winning gold medals at the 2012 games and enacting their thoughts on global citizenship. Shirley Keane, the project manager for Citizens 2012, says the students made the most of the experience: "The kids were great because they're so open. When it came to filming they weren't shy about holding a camera, clapping a clapperboard or using a microphone. They absolutely wanted to be part of it."听 Theatre Venture has been engaging communities in east London and beyond in theatre, media and arts projects for over 25 years. Their current project has clearly gone some way to making the average school term a little more exciting than normal. Marta Cabero, teacher of the year 6 filmmakers at Portway, believes Citizens 2012 has made her students more aware of the wider world: "One thing that children don't often realise is that they live in a big world. For them to be in touch with children in Nepal is a fantastic experience because they realise they live in a very different way. For them to see that you need to have certain values, no matter where you live, was really educational"听听 The launch of a dedicated website means Newham鈥檚 young citizens can now share their work with their old friends at home and new friends across the world. Meanwhile, Theatre Venture hopes to develop and extend this project across the five Olympic boroughs over the coming months.听 If you would like to see the films on the host Citizens 2012 website that has been created specifically for this project, then click on the link up on the right hand side of this page.
