Chinese New Year celebrations kick off in the capital on Sunday 10 February, ringing in the Year of the Rat with a traditional parade, while the city-wide cultural initiative China in London - a season of activities celebrating the city's connections with Beijing and beyond - takes root from now until the end of spring.

The season launches on Wednesday 6 February with the switching-on of the Oxford Circus Chinese lanterns, and it sees a number of organisations hosting art, dance, music, film, food tastings and various interactive events of a Chinese hue.听

Highlights over the next few months:

  • The Beijing Modern Dance Company performs in London for the first time,听 combining traditional Chinese and Buddhist expression with contemporary dance practice at the Royal Opera House.

  • Also at the Opera House is a UK-China hip hop music exchange featuring Dragon Tongue Squad, DJ Phat and Suki Mok, marking the first instalment of Chinatown Arts Space's Five Circles festival, an initiative promoting new and contemporary art forms.

  • Asia House hosts Modern Chinese Art, a two-part exhibition of late twentieth century and contemporary works from the private collection of scholar Michael Sullivan and his wife Khoan, collected over a period of 65 years and on show for the first time.听

  • The first solo exhibition of Chinese artist Lu Chunsheng, meanwhile, is a retrospective at the Red Mansion Foundation, featuring the artist's atmospheric films and photographs, curated by the Serpentine Gallery's Hans Ulrich Obrist.

  • City Hall hosts the photographic exhibitions Beijing - The Magnificent City and Women in 21st century China, presented by The All China Women's Federation.

  • There are free performances and activities for adults and families as part of the V&A's Chinese programme, leading up to the launch of China Design Now, an exhibition examining all aspects of contemporary Chinese design.听

  • And the British Museum has its own series of events and performances as well as The First Emperor: China's Terracotta Army exhibition, on until April 2008.

  • One-off events, performances and masterclasses continue up to and beyond the China in London finale on Sunday 6 April when the Olympic Flame comes to London as part of the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay.
