The Moths motif

London Calling's The Moths - we think!

The Moths

Flitting about in a frenzy of disorientation, could the bright lights of fame be beginning to have their effect on the Moths...?

Spawned after a sleep-deprived developmental period, The Moths finally crawled from their chrysalis in 2006 to bless West London and beyond with their supercharged electro pop.

With influences including David Bowie, the Pixies and Depeche Mode, the trio's sound lodges effortlessly in your brain.

While frontman James Fox has been likened to Brett Anderson, his lyrical style walks a close line with last year's Breaking Up album from Wakefield's The Research; it's the sort of gutter poetry once heard from the likes of London's Hefner.

Backing up Fox are guitarist Dave Lightfoot and Jon Vick, who provides beats and keys.

They admit their number one song to cover would be The Buzzcock's You Say You Don't Love Me. In fact, the band's own London Calling chosen track, Games, is similarly punchy. It's the first of three songs featured on their forthcoming single.

Repeated airplay and some great live reviews suggest it's all beginning to happen for The Moths, so we asked the band what their favourite moment to date would be.

Things sometimes get sketchy.

The enthusiastic reply came back, "When the fox became the music at the Barfly, and then re-demming our sins at the Dublin Castle!" Hmm, boys.

Signed to the small Label Fandango, The Moths set their debut single free on 16 March ahead of a UK tour. You can have a sneaky peek before that though, by logging on to their MySpace page at myspace.co/themothsuk (see right for links).

And don't forget to check out our other London Calling greats via the London Calling Index Link in the right-hand column of this page. We've racked up quite a few, don't you know!
