What is it?

Part of urban London, Greenwich is best known for its maritime history and as the location of Greenwich Mean Time.

There has a noticeable contrast in fortunes in the Greenwich area; Greenwich Village is the more affluent area compared to the deprived neighbourhoods of Woolwich which were badly affected by the closure of the Royal Arsenal in 1967.

The Vision

Greenwich Council’s vision for the area is to close the gap between Woolwich and Greenwich. This includes developing the Greenwich Peninsula around the existing millennium structure and Woolwich town centre. Potentially the development could create up to 15,000 homes and 11,000 jobs by 2016.

Local theatre, concert and dance programmes have benefited from recent investment, further enhancing the areas cultural appeal.

Plans to make the area more accessible are well underway with the recent completion of the Jubilee line extension to the Peninsula. This vision will be further realised with Greenwich Waterfront Transit opening in 2009. The bus service system will link Woolwich, the Peninsula and Thamesmead.

Where is it?

On the south bank of the Thames, the London Borough of Greenwich is home to some of London’s top tourism attractions, notably the Royal Observatory and Cutty Sark.

When is it happening?

Most Greenwich sites are still in the planning stages but 'The O2' [the new name for the Millennium Dome] has completed some of it developments and they will be opening in July 2007.

The Numbers

• Royal Arsenal will have 1,250 homes completed in 2007.
• Woolwich town centre will have over 3,900 new homes in the various development sites.
• 2,000 homes will be started this year in Tamesis point due for completion in 2011.
• White Hart Triangle business park will create over 2,000 jobs in the 100,000 sq.m industrial space to be completed in 2011.
• 546 homes were completed in 2006 in the Artillery Query, Woolwich.
• MDL Sites, Greenwich Peninsula will have 10,000 homes by 2021.

MDL sites – Greenwich Peninsula

This development will provide 10,000 new homes by 2021 and a new employment space of 325,000 sq.m. 38% of the homes will be affordable.

There will also be a new secondary school, primary schools and health care facilities for the new residential area. Construction is due to start in 2007. The Greenwich Peninsula regeneration is the largest housing-led project in the Gateway.

In 2009-2010 The Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication’s will move from its current location in Chislehurst to the Greenwich Peninsula, improving the areas access to further education.

Greenwich Millennium Village

Construction of this site has already begun with 700 of the proposed 2,950 homes already completed. A new primary school and health centre along with the remaining homes will be completed by 2016.

Lovells Granite and Pipers Wharf – Greenwich Peninsular

The planning is still underway to develop 500-600 homes and 500 jobs in the area. Should planning go ahead, the community will be served by new health facilities and a riverside walk.

The O2 – Greenwich Peninsula

Formally known as The Millennium Dome the site is set to open again in July 2007. It will include an 11-screen cinema, a music club with the capacity for 2,200, an exhibition building and 14 bars and restaurants. A new public space the size of Leicester Square will also be opening in July.

This new world-class leisure development will produce in excess of 1,700 jobs.

New Heart for East Greenwich

Around a newly built public square some 700 homes will be built, planning dependent.

Woolwich - Royal Arsenal

The redevelopment of the former Arsenal at Woolwich will have created 1,250 homes by the end of 2007 to buy or rent. There are 40 businesses employing over 350 staff. This development will almost double the size of Woolwich town centre.Ìý Work has started on the DLR extension to Woolwich Arsenal and will eventually connect the area to the City.

The WarrenÌý - Woolwich Town Centre

The second part of Woolwich town centre development, this area will deliver 2,500 homes, a cinema and a hotel by 2016.

Hare Street Triangle – Woolwich Town Centre

A mixture of improving existing structures and new buildings, including a department store, will create 25,500 sq.m of retail space on Hare Street Triangle as well as 80 homes. These developments are still at the planning stage.

Love Lane – Woolwich Town Centre

If planning is granted Love Lane could be home to a new civic centre including a library, a new supermarket and 1000 homes. Some 600 jobs could be created on completion of the project in 2011.

Tamesis Point

Work on this site is set to start in 2007 and will create 2,000 high quality homes alongside the Thames. Other planned facilities include a new leisure centre, health centre and a primary school. The developments are due to be completed in 2016.

Mc Bean Street – Woolwich Town Centre

This small development could provide 100 homes and 4,600 sq.m of retail space. Planning is still underway but completion of the project is set for 2012.

Academy, Woolwich Common

Planning is still to be determined for this site but 500 homes are proposed as well as artist workshops.

Woolwich DLR exchange

Building on the DLR extension 670 homes and 2,500 sq.m of retail space are to be built by 2011. This project is still at the planning stage.

White Hart Triangle

100,000 sq.m of high quality business space will be completed in 2011 creating 2,000 jobs.

Vista Building – Woolwich town centre

224 homes were completed in 2006 when a high rise building in the town centre was converted.

Artillery Quary – Woolwich

A small residential development completed in 2006 that created 546 homes.

Anchor and Hope Lane – Woolwich

Completed in 2007, this development created 330 sq.m of retail space.

Mastpond Wharf

181 homes were completed in 2006 in this residential development.

Gallions Reach Urban Village

This is the name given to a collection of developments in the west Thamesmead area, including Thameswalk [Barratts] and The Gateway [Miller ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖs].

Once fully completed this scheme will provide 2,000 new homes, a new school, shops, a hotel and community facilities.

Part of the development is the already completed, Gallions Ecopark, a scheme of 39 houses and eight flats, with the intention of becoming a model of environmental sustainability and eco-living.

New homes have also been built at Royal Artillery Quays and there will be further development at the Tripcock Point site, which has just been granted planning permission.
