Back in February 2020, the Shared Data Unit invited 20 delegates to the Mailbox in Birmingham to interrogate the database behind MYEU.UK.
The website, created by Hope Thomas and John Lees-Miller, maps where European Union money has been spent within the UK by extracting information from more than 20 different sources including the European Regional Development Fund and European Social Fund.
With the United Kingdom having recently exited the European Union, journalists from ITV, JPI Media, Reach and Newsquest alongside students from the University of Birmingham, freelance data journalists and visualisation experts, were tasked with finding out how sectors such as farming and education, would be affected within the UK.
The day ended with an informal discussion among the delegates, who were free to take any of the stories gathered on the day back to their newsrooms for use on an embargoed date. The findings from the day helped delegate Chris Love to create this dashboard: What鈥檚 the EU done for us?
