More
memories of the Empire...
Hello
- my name is Hazel Redgrave (nee Miller). As a girl I lived at 29
Fitzclarence Street, Everton, until we went out to live in Africa
in 1948.
Either
that year, or the year before, my dad took me to see a pantomime,
Mother Goose. I seem to remember that it was at the Empire Theatre
in Lime Street. I say this because before the panto, we watched
and listened to a band playing in front of St. George's Hall.
I can
still remember part of the songsheet which was lowered for us all
to sing: "Who put the liver in Liverpool, that's what we want
to know....."
Best
wishes to all and many thanks, Hazel.
And
more...
I went
to see Frank Sinatra at the Empire. At that time he was not doing
so good with his recording career. The Show was twice nightly and
I went to the first house. There was approximately 200 people in
the the Empire, which means it was quite empty.
However
Frank was in brilliant voice, especially his rendering of Old Man
River. At the close I went to the stage Door and there was nobody
there. Frank came out wearing a dark brown suit. He got into a car
that turned left into Lime Street and left without any signs of
fans.
I
then went to Mather Avenue (Greenhill Road) for cricket practice
and when I told the players I had been to see Frank Sinatra they
were more upset about me not being at full practice than their missing
his performance.
He
was on the Empire all week. It was not long after that From Here
to Eternity shot him back into the limelight with of course his
first 10" LP Songs for Young Lovers being released.
