also shares her memories of the Wash House and Baths in Barnes Street
in Kensington which she visited regularly (wash house on a Monday,
baths on a Thursday) until the 1970's when she could no longer get
to them.
More
memories of the Bath House...
My
name is Hazel Redgrave (nee Miller) and I remember the Kensington
Bath House in Liverpool. We used to stay with my grandma in nearby
Adelaide Road from time to time, and nearly every winter a pipe
would freeze and burst. When that happened my sister Rose and I
would be sent off to the bath house.
It was always lovely and warm in there, lots of steam and clean
smells. Your bath would be run for you by a lady who would warn
you sternly NOT to run any more hot water, but we found a way round
it by tying a face flannel to the hot tap and letting the flannel
hang in the bath. In this way you could turn the hot tap on slowly,
the water would run down the flannel quietly and you could fill
the enormous bath to the top!
We
were always a bit sorry when the burst pipe at home was fixed. Although
grandma had a bath, it was tiny compared to those at the bath house.

4d for the hire of a crisp starched towel including 3d deposit cica
1960. 2d to get in. The 3d returned was usually spent on chips or
a single cigarette(woodbine) and sweets.
There
was swift retribution when the smoke from the "loosie"
was smelled on the breath as we were only 12 at the time.
