Big Dance Chinese style

by Andrew McElroy, guest contributor
To celebrate Big Dance week, The Collage of Chinese Physical Culture is holding series of taster dance workshops in Leicester. Andrew McElroy caught up with them to find out what it was all about…

The Collage of Chinese Physical Culture in Leicester is celebrating Big Dance week by inviting people to have a go at a special dance called Weihai Lishi Quanfa.

"It is an ancient system based on breathing techniques and graceful movements..."
Andrew McElroy

They are holding 12 taster sessions and people of all ages are invited to watch and take part in.

Andrew McElroy went along to one of the sessions to catch up with the group and join in the action.

The first steps

Martin Scott who is a trained physiotherapist and lead dancer of the East-Midlands group told us that he teaches a unique exercise system known as Weihai Lishi Quanfa.

It is an ancient system based on breathing techniques and graceful movements, designed to synchronise and deepen breathing and help the body to work cognitively and focus energy. It has also been known to help those who struggle with Asthma

Now its your turn...

Once Martin had warmed up the group he was able to show us all how to perform some of the moves.

People were able to get involved with the group and perform. It was clear to see that grace and elegance could not be gained through one session, but people seemed to be enjoying themselves which made it worth the while.

There's an open invitation for everyone to join in, and you don't need special equipment or to be fit. In fact one of the aims of the Big Dance week is to show that dance is a fun way to get active, and stay fit.
