In 1777, the Manufacturers’ Corporation of Galashiels was formed with just 23 members. The first mill was built in 1800. Buckholm Mill, Galashiels © Scran | Galashiels became known throughout the world as a producer of checked cloth that became known as ‘Shepherd’s Checks’ or ‘Shepherds Plaid’. This cloth was favoured by Sir Walter Scott, and it became fashionable in the early part of the 19th Century due at least in part to the success of Scott and the subsequent interest in the Borders and their culture.
