Bursting for a prawn

I was having a long weekend in Rome and thought that I'd test out a bit of the lingo, as I usually find that people are more receptive if you 'have a go' rather than just assuming that your English will be understood. But whilst out for a meal I stood up and asked the waiter: Dove sono i gamberetti?, where are the prawns? - only to be met with a confused look and certainly not the required directions to the toilets. The requested phrase was of course: Dove sono i gabinetti?

It happens, don't feel so bad. For a simpler form, simply ask, Dove è il bagno? You'll at the very least get directions to a sink rather than an expensive meal. Ciao!
