A fishy dessert

On a trip to Italy, my sister-in-law and I were getting mad with the waiter because he made out that he could not understand us when we asked for peach ice-cream by ordering gelati pesce. When we met up with my brother later on, he explained the reason why the waiter couldn't understand was because I was asking for fish ice-cream!

Editor's note: Hmm - tasty!! But they weren't far off the mark - to ensure you get peach rather than fish-flavoured ice-cream in Italy, ask for gelato alla pesca.

Another word that changes meaning with different pronunciation is Monaco. It can either mean Monaco or Munich.

Did the same thing. And the waitress said in English with a beautiful Italian accent "In Italy we don't do the FISH ice-cream" to which all my family fell around laughing.

Many words in Italian are written the same but have different meanings. It's all down to the way the word is pronounced. Another common word is ancora which could mean 'again' or 'anchor'.

I also had this trouble in Italy and ordered a 'fish juice' to drink.
