Bread and games

When I left school in the early 1960's I decided to walk along the banks of the Rhine from Köln to Koblenz and sample the hostelries en route. My German then as now was rudimentary and was only useful in getting me a room, a beer and a sausage. English was not spoken there much in those days. I wanted to eat so I asked for the menu - I thought - but instead I got playing cards, Spielkarten. After some further exchanges, I received what I really wanted, die Speisekarte. However, I had a smashing alcohol-fueled evening there with the locals. Wine was 4 DM (old money) a glass.
