I am the champignon!(English/French)

I get confused over the French word for champion, le champion and the French word for mushroom, le champignon. While on a trip to France I was playing boule. I won and ended up embarrasing myself by saying 'I am the mushroom'.

A group of US-Candians learning French went for a hike with a hiking club in Strasbourg. Our friend Mike offered some peanuts, saying Voulez-vous des arachides. He was corrected with M. ce ne sont pas des arachides. Ce sont des cacahuètes. Mike did a little rehearsing and then again offered some peanuts saying Voulez-vous des cacachouettes? Les Stasbourgeois doubled up in laughter. With the offer of 'great poop', the famous Strasbourgeoisian reserve dissolved.

While in France when they won the World Cup in 98, my husband asked why everyone was singing about Henry Mushroom (Henri Champignon!) misunderstanding the chant On est champion! We related this story to our neighbours on the camp site who fell about laughing and sang Henry Champignon everytime they saw him. On our return they sent a post card from their home town in France addressed to Mr Henri Champignon!

The late lamented Ray Moore always claimed that the French close-harmony group "Les Compagnons De La Chanson", The Companions of Song, actually means "The mushrooms of chance".
