Language with many regional differences (Tunisia)
I've been spending some time in Tunisia where I use mostly French but explore the Arabic language more and more. Some advice for people who want to learn Arabic: At first, maybe try to get a place over or near a shop or café as you can hear the banter of people coming and going. Take taxis and talk to the drivers. Taxi drivers have good skills in understanding people with strong accents. Watch TV everyday in the language. Also, remember that spoken languages are changing all the time, and regional differences may make what you know from another place useless. In Syria and Jordan I was getting pretty good at Arabic, but here in Tunisia they seem to use almost none of the same words. People laugh and say I sound Egyptian. I can be understood but I have little idea what is said to me.
