Happy to be corrected
I've been living in Germany for one year and three months. I'm a 31 year old Civil Engineer. Before I went I undertook a 6 month one hour a week language course which gave me a very basic tourist level German. Nobody in the office speaks fluent English (or that's what they tell me!) and they are very patient and happy to correct me when I go wrong with German. Germans in general are very forgiving and happy to help if you make mistakes trying to speak German and very many of them are fluent at speaking English. My girlfriend is German who speaks incredibly fluent English, and without the help of her and her family, I would have had to learn a lot more before I came.

I know what you mean about their being happy to help you and polite about mistakes. I tried a little German on the phone when I called somewhere in Germany the other day. The man laughed (not rudely) and switched to English. It was obvious, I guess. Since then, I have been working on my German full-time.
