Learning the language is a must

I moved to a rural part of France 18 months ago. I live alone for the moment as my partner is still working in England until the end of the year, when he retires. I am 39 years old. Although I spoke some 'schoolgirl' French when I arrived I had to improve - rapidly. I found that in rural areas there are various literacy organisations which, although they are primarily aimed at teaching reading and writing to the French, also run French language classes for overseas residents. In my area the association is called Envol, and they have weekly classes teaching French at various levels. Most important for me - the classes are completely free! If you are moving to France, whether with a family or as a pensioner, I would say you must, must, MUST learn the language.

I am from India and spent a semester in Perpignan on an exchange programme. Despite having studied French for five years, I found the immersion to be quite challenging. There were times when I was misunderstood, but the people were always helpful and that made my learning experience more complete.

This is so true Glenda. I lived in France for three years and had to return to Ireland for a while but hope to go back this spring. Since returning home I have spent every minute learning French, as I know how isolating it can be, not to speak the language. I would not go back and live there again without it, as I want to enjoy the experience to the full.
