I went to Ivy Bank High School.. or was it Ivy Bank Business And Enterprise College, one or the other. I didnt attend for long. went in september 2002 and left in may 2003. me and my brother didnt like it. me and my family disliked the area. and the school. so much racism back then. even though it was 6 years ago. maybe its changed? my other brother attended Habergham high school and got beaten up every day for 2 weeks because he was different from the rest. although so much happened. it was an ok school, not one of the best but it wasnt all bad. some people there are good and the teachers at the time were great :).

I went to Hargher Clough Infants from 1967 to 1971 and Ivy Bank from 1971 to 1972 (We moved to Keighley but would have left 1976) I remember the wonderful Mr Francis as headmaster at Hargher Clough; Miss Melthorpe from being about 8 or maybe 9 and my final year there was in top class with a teacher famous for spitting when she talked, hence the nickname "Spitfire" but can't remember her name! She was a strict but fair teacher. I hated every moment of Ivy Bank and have very few memories of it, but Hargher Clough will forever live in my memory as one of the best places I have ever had the pleasure to attend! Oh Mr Hanz the caretaker was lovely too! I'd love to be in touch with anyone who remembers me, Caroline Spink, Wendy Francis, Gillian Bentley, Doreen Clegg but to name a few.

Mandy Fitzsimmons
I went to St. Hilda's Girls school between 1969-1975. I often wonder what became of everyone, teachers included; the wonderful, drogonian Miss Waterworth, the scary, insightful Mr. Ramsbottom, Sister Mary Elizabeth who tried so hard to teach me French and the wonderful, confusing Miss Clegg, my Spanish teacher, what can I say except that I am now fluent in Spanish and even have a degree in it! That marvellous History teacher (very thin, anorexic? So unkown then!) who breathed life into her subject. I could go on.. Anyone out there who still remembers them or knows what happened to them? I will never forget St.Hilda's, it gave me a fundamental grounding and interest in learning which has perdured until today. Thank you to all the teachers, staff and fellow students whom I loved and hated alternatively and from whom I received so much, so ungratefully, as is the way of the young.

lynn stanworth nee (hattersley)
I went to st johns junior school Nelson about 1965..went to edge end high 1970's would love to find some old photo's

I went to Edge End from 1957- 1963, my brother Brian was 2 yrs below me. When I left I worked at Asquith Electrics in Colne until 1968, when I emigrated to South Africa. I remember Jimmy Safkin, the head, a short guy who nearly always walked the classrooms in his gown. Bill Oddie, Maths & Woodwork, Joe Crossley (Joe Egg), Metalwork. Mr.Anthony, German, Mr.Tempest, Surveying. He used to sneak up on you if you were naughty in class & flick you on the back of the ear. Many others I remember, the Cunliffes, Ron represented UK in the Helsinki Olympics, Mr.Harris (Art),Mrs.Morton (Maths). A good time to be at school, Edge End gave me an education to be proud of. The days of the "Imp", the Lionel Morton 4 (later the 4 Pennies), the Hollies. Yes, Nelson in the '60's was a good place to be. I am visiting the UK in June/July 2009 & hope to visit some local areas again.

I went to Ivy Bank and was in the last year of all girls before it became a comprehensive school. I went with my twin Angela Brown and our friends were Shirley Bullen, Karen Yates. I remember being in the history lesson on the top floor of the building which was like a sky scraper. The headmaster was always passionate and emotional in assembly. Those were definitely good days.

Elizabeth Devlin (Kilbride)

Christine Lonsdale( Frankland)
I went to Back Lane School 1952 until it fell down. Mr Ashworth was headmaster. Then on to BGHS 1958 to 1962 had very mixed feelings about the school while I was there as was very hard for working class girls to fit in. Later I had to admit the strict discipline helped me when a teaching student. Miss Knapton gave me a love of History and Misss Moore a love of English but Miss Laws scared me to death.

saresh
i love this school 2007 to 2008

Gerald Keys
I went to Towneley Technical High in 1946, the first intake after it changed from a secondary modern school. I remember the sec. moderners still remaining were a bit hostile towards us at first. I remember the headmaster, Mr Lancaster - very fierce - and Mr Redhead who was an excellent maths teacher.

Janette Jones

Jean Barton nee Buckley
Loved reading about the comments of Burnley Girls High in 1948, I too was a student there at that time. Anxious to leave school as soon as I was old enough to go Nursing school, but what a good grounding I had. Have lived in New Zealand for nearly fifty years but my school days are still very memorable.

Cheryl Hawke
I attend Walshaw High Schools between 83 and 88. It was a great school back then. Loved my teenage years in the 80's

Go Walshaw (sir John Thursby) It Were An Amazing School Until Barden Came. Completley Recked It. Leaving This Year And Im Gunna Miss Everyone.

Nina Raffoux (nee Lucil).
Nina Raffoux (nee Lucil)I attended Burnley Girls High School between Sept. 1955 and July 1957. Discovering this site today prompted me to dig out an old, panoramic photo of the whole school (staff and pupils) taken in April 1957 (I was in the 2nd form then) in an attempt to jog my memory as regards names and faces – not very successfully, unforunateley. In my class, the only complete names I remember are Barbara Howard and Diane Stokoe. Among the members of staff mentioned by others on this site, Miss Law, Miss Davenport, Miss Horton and Mrs Thornton ring a bell, but I also remember Miss Lucy (French) and Mrs Taylor, very tall, slim and elegant and extremely strict (Science, I think). Does anyone remember my mother, Mrs Lucil, who taught English at BGSH for the same 2 years that I was a pupil ? Does any one remember me ?We moved from Burnley in 1957 to Dorchester in Dorset, then spent 2 years in Baghdad (Iraq), returning in 1961 to Leamington Spa. I went on to do a French Degree at London University. I moved to France in 1966 and have lived here since.

Uzma Arif (uzzy)
I left mansfield high school in 2006 i was there from 2001 i loved me 5 years there and it's a shame that they are gona knock it down as me memories are there even though i ated lessons n sme teachers i still miss it an will alwayz memba da good teachers. I had a rihgt life it woz a cool school apart from da odd facilities like food tech n stuff it wer alright. I am not dat appy dat they r ave mixed edge end n mansfiled togeva as they shud ave done it wen da schools wud ave been built it's more complicated n confusin nw coz me sis goes there. But i will memba it alwayz ive dne really well at college as i am gona go to uni soon to study business managament all thanx to mansfield like teachers n stuff.

Keeping it real- class of 2006
I left Mansfield just before it closed and still can't decide whether it was a good idea to join the two schools - i guess they can't fight about what schools best anymore. but seriously at the time i hated it but now i actually miss it. i thought we didn't have the equipment or resources to do P.E or food tech - i never once cooked anything. in p.e it was rounders every week - no wonder so many of us faked injuries. but yet i miss it - i miss all my mates. mansfield was so UNCOMPLICATED. Things just happend in the education side of things and you were free to chill and express yourself - but that doesn't mean we were stupid. i am studying medicine at uni this september. so it just goes to show it's not the school facilities but the schools spirit that takes you places in life. Thanks to all those teachers that made me believe.

jenny sawley
i went to walshaw! best years ov my life. miss everyone :( (2001-2006) x

Raymond Douglas Pickering
Left Towneley Technical High School in 1957. Sports teachers were Frank Saul & Keith Green. I played for Towneley in the schools soccer final at Turf Moor in April 1957. We beat Barden Secondary School 3-1.Peter Wood, Neil Whalley, Bobby Entwistle, Alan Dower are some of the names I remember. My English teacher was called "Turkey" the deputy head under Mr' Lancaster was "skinhead" and of course "Tiger Bill' for history.

Class of 2006
i attended Mansfield High School between 2001 - 2006. it was one of the best school around and the teacher were awesome. i had best 5 years aneone could ever want.. it a shame dey knocking it down it has alot of gud memories for al the ex mansfielderz...

I attended st hilda's between 1987-1992. It was one of the best schools around. I can't believe they have given in to merging the two schools.

JANE RILEY
I can't believe Edge End is closing. I was there between 1964 and 1970 and have some really great and some really horrible memories of my years there. The Head was Mr;Safkin and I was terrified of him. He lost his wife late in the sixties and seemed to shrink inside himself from then. I lost my dad in 1970 and had to leave school to find a job and I remember he was really sympathetic and really great with my mum who was suffering. The deputy Head was Mr Burt, whom everyone hated. He also taught maths, happily I had Mr. Briggs areal teddy bear. Mr and Mrs Cunliffe were my gym and english teachers respectively andd their son Melvyn and I did some amateur dramatics together.Mr Jacques (maths) Mr Marshall (physics) Mr; Greenhalgh (biology) Mr Darlington (english) Mr Morris (history...I was secretly in love with him!) Mr Harris (Art....and what an artist.;;he made all the props for the school plays...magnificent) Mr Wilkinson (History and rugbyman!!!)Miss Greenhalgh (gym...called Peaknees behind her back) Mrs Stott (Gym) Miss Pettingell (Religious studies...didn't do very well in this subject!)All have their place in my memories. Some are dead but they live on in us, the pupils that owe a certain something of their existence to them. Goodbye and thanks for all the fish.

Brian Hunt
I went to Towneley Technical High School from 1947 to 1951. I think our year was the first (or mebbe second) intake after the school changed from a secondary modern to a high school. You had to pass the 11+ to get in! Our first home room teacher was Mr. Clook (French), said to have suffered burns as a pilot in the war. Other teachers of note - Mr. Wall (constantly jangled coins in his pants pocket); Sabu (English) - can't remember his real name - his favourite punishment was "order mark & 10 lines"; Joey Redhead who had a board ruler marked in chalk (in reverse)- arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trig., which he applied to the seat of your pants if you erred, leaving an imprint thereon and for more serious transgressions a cane called "Excalibur" - man that really hurt; Clem Cole, chemistry, very bushy black eyebrows; Mr Baldwin ( I think that's right), also chemistry, who spoke with very sibilant esses and lots of spray causing Brian Bithel to raise a paper umbrella in class one day. Big mistake; the two Mr Lords - metalworking & woodworking; Mr. Saul who I remember seeing chasing a gym malefactor around the corridor brandishing a running shoe as a club. Members of our class included Alan Atkinson, Brian Bithel, Alan Lawson, David Fairhurst, Tom Feeney, Jim Fallows, Alan Pollard, Jim Pollard (there were two Pollards), Alan Dickinson & Harry Todd. That's a long time ago now, and although I can't remeber where I put my keys, I can remember Townely quite well. After going through an engineering apprenticeship at Joseph Lucas, I emigrated to Canada where I still reside.

Alan Pollard
I recently met up with Brenda Holland who taught me in the first year at Barden in 1958. I had not seen her since that time so it was truly wonderful to see her after all those years. I was able to tell her of a play we read with her which, at the time, influenced me so much I still use it today with the Children who I currently teach. I understand Mr Harry Simpson, another ole teacher of mine is writing a history of those years.

Jeanette Irwin(nee Smithies)
From 1950-52 I attended Coal Clough Infants. From 1952-1956 Hargher Clough Juniors and from 1956-63 Burnley Girls High School. I hit on this site by accident and really enjoyed reading all the comments from past pupils. I have very fond memories of B.G.H.S. and its staff, especially Miss. Law(head), Miss. Davenport, Miss. Horton, Mrs. Gregg, Mrs. Thorton, Miss. Butterwoth, both Miss. Moores, Mrs. Dearing and many more. Members of my class were Helen Furness, Carole Thornber, Susan Lee, Kathleen Crook, who I went on a course to Oxford with, Marjorie McCarthy etc. I left to go to college in Ambleside, married a local and have never left the Lake District. I was sad to read that the schools were disappearing and I also wondered what would happen to the awards boards as My name appears on one for 'Loyalty to the School'. I would love to hear from any one who was at any of these schools at the same time as myself. I have retired from teaching having spent the last 27years as a maths teacher in a local school. Jeanette Irwin.

Sharon
I went to Stoneyholme in the 70's John Whittam was truly inspirational, also went to the Municople College and John Sandiford was pretty special too.

Alan Howarth
I went to Towneley Tech. High School from St. Andrew's School in Colne Rd. in 1949. I left in 1954 to take up an apprenticeship at Lucas Burnley. I remember "Tiger" Bill Howarth (english & history),Ignatius Redhead(maths),Willy Woodwork!and of course Mr. Harry Lancaster(our Headmaster) oh, and Frank Saul (P.E.).I generally enjoyed my time at T.T.H.S. and whist I now live in Australia and have done since 1982 I still get back to the UK. every couple of years and always take a nostalgic trip up Towneley Holmes to look at the old school

Colin Richardson
I attended Edge End Secondary School from 1957 to 1963 when my parents decided to emigrate to Australia. It saddens me to hear that the school is closing as it holds many great memories for me least of which was a good education that has carried me well through my life.I wish all concerned nothing but the best and I look forward to a reply to my much belated comments

Spyrobandi
One of the best. building in Pendle. As an ex student of walton high. i am ouraged that this lovely building will soon be a car park

Joan Harrison nee Shuttleworth
I attended Burnley High School for Girls on Ormerod Road from 1948 to 1953. It was a superb school and I have many happy memories: a few bad ones of course, like my struggles with algebra and trigonometry. Our headmistress was Miss Howard, a truly formidable lady, but one who had high standards and made sure that all her 'girls' maintained those standards. Most of the teachers were excellent, although of course, we liked some more than others. I remember Miss Davenport who taught English. I have never forgotten the difference between 'less' and 'fewer', and how to write a sentence correctly, thanks to her lessons in clause analysis. She also awakened in me a love of words and English Literature. A lady by the unlikely name of Miss Smith taught us French - very thoroughly indeed. I still remember much of it.The school itself was in a Victorian building which we shared with Burnley Municipal Technical College. I remember we could hear the sound of looms on the ground floor, echoing from the weaving department in the extension. Games? To play hockey, we had to take a bus to Towneley playing fields. Netball was in the school playground - probably a car park now. We had a very good gymnasium though.Schooldays may not be 'the happiest days of your life' but they were very happy ones for me, and I was privileged to receive an excellent education which has stood me in good stead for the rest of my life. Names from my class? I remember Brenda Race, Kathleen Owen, Maureen Pollard, Pat White, Pat Varley, Alison Fraser, Marjorie Fyles, Margaret Dean . . . lots of other faces, but forgotten the names.

Ann Durant
I attended Coal Clough then Ivy Bank in the early 1960s.I was from a family of seven and a Council House. I was one of the first pupils through the door and I remember the lovely 'new smell' of the brand new school with its new fancy Gym,lovely classrooms,Dining Hall and individual Lockers it was a dream school! We were also allowed on summer trip for a week to Carnforth. I thought it was a great school.I was not the brightest of pupils being in 1c but was determined to move up a class which I did to 3b. The teachers all seemed nice and I was a Prefect in the last year. Miss Lucas was the Headmistress. Miss Webster was the Art teacher,Miss Astin the PE teacher,Mrs Rawstrone Needlework and our form teacher. When my time came to leave school I had just turned 15 years and Whereas everyone leaving seemed happy I cried my eyes out in the toilets because I did not want to leave lovely Ivy Bank School! No wonder because I went to work in a Bakery and in those days poor families needed all the money they could as people did not claim benefits. I earned £5 a week and handed it to my mother she gave £1 back. However I quickly moved on. I am now proud to say that I have a BSc(Hons) and an MA.Happy Days - yes - great school - yes

Ivan
I attended Barden 1980-1985 and in retrospect it was great. Forget the glue sniffers and the racial problems - it was a real school where students were given a chance to better themselves. Its recent performance saddens me and probably justifies its closure...

Carol Pollard
I attended Burnley Girls High School from 1958 to 1962 when we emigrated to the USA. It was an interesting experience to say the least - I still have vivid memories of Mrs. Dearden dragging a girl by her hair through the hallways to stick her head under the sink taps in the girls toilets to remove any hair dye that SHE didn't personally approve of!!!! And, of course, there was my weekly visit to the Chem. Lab for removal with pure acetone at a cost of threepence of any nail polish that I might have on from the weekend. Not to mention the weekly visits to Miss Law's office for attitude adjustment. I have fonder memories of Miss Thornton in recreation (she also taught my Dad) but for the most part I found the teachers militant and unforgiving - fortunately most of us turned out great despite them!!!! I am now living in Boone, North Carolina USA, have my PhD and am a University Professor and an IBM Visiting Researcher - despite the staff at BGHS saying I would never amount to anything :-)

Arooj Riaz

Shafi
I attended barden high school in 2002 - 2006. I am at my last year at the new school called sir john thursby community college which replaced former walshaw high school. Barden has always been inside my heart. I will never forget this school for the rest of my life. I thank the school for taking a whole school photograph before we finished. Atleast years to come i will remember my form tutor who was very kind and always concerned about our future and some other staff who have already passed away which also sadens me. May god bless everyone with their desires!!!

Ivy Bank was built in the early 60's, for pupils & staff who attended Coal Clough Secondary. This was a dark dismal building which I attended in my first year. In my second year we moved to Ivy Bank, this wonderful bright, airy, high rise building, we all got our own lockers, which we were allowed to buy a lock for!! The headmistress was Miss Lucas who aways wore some green even if it was a handkerchief tucked in the strap of her watch. I remember Miss Knight & then Mrs Crabtree the music teachers. We had Maths with Mr Kennedy on the top floor, I was hopeless with Maths & always ended up gazing out of the window over the fields. Everyone even the poorest of pupils wore the navy blue uniform. I was never happy or unhappy at school I just knew I had to go. Lots of us had to travel on the double decker buses to get to school, I dont ever remember there being much trouble. There used to be a little bakers shop in the terraced houses where we got off the bus & we used to buy the mini loaves still warm. In later years my nephew & neice attended here. I feel very sad at the comments some of the pupils have put on this page, it seems there has been a deterioration in school life over the years, it's a time we never get back. When I married I moved away from Burnley- although my family are still there. I slowly lost touch with everyone I knew in my school years.

I attended Habergham High school 2000-2005 and the 6th form centre in 2006. Im now at burnley schools sixth form (the old barden site) I miss Habergham very much! it was a fantastic school! some great teachers! some great memories (and some bad ones!) came away with results to be proud of! thanks! good luck in the future to all the teachers who worked at any of the schools that have closed. and good luck to the students who are stuck in the middle! thanks

i attended Burnley high school for girls from 1963. Great memories though i didn,t think much of school at the time . Never appreciated the dicipline but realise now that its a great foundation for later life.keeping my eye out for future reunions, missed the last one!I also remember mrs Thornton .... the 'pretend you are a puddle of water and someone has thrown a pebble in' dance lessons!I remember Marilyn Hemmingway,Pamela Wood and Dianne Huxtable who i went arround with.Do you remember miss Woods beautiful handwriting and those bright yellow summer dresses that attracted the wasps? ok, i may have been a bit of a rebel then but ,thanks to the school, i think i've turned out pretty sound . Hope to read more comments from fellow former pupils in future.

Margaret Morgan (nee Pickles)
I attended Edge End from 1956-1962 and all my memories are extremly happy ones. Discipline was very strict under the Headmaster Joe Safkin. I am now a member of Pendle Movie Makers and we made a film of the closure celebration on 24th June 2006.

I attended Burnley High School from 1965 until 1971. The Head Teacher was Miss Howard and she supervised the move from Ormerod Road to its new building. She was follwed by Miss Laws who was head until 1966.My two youngest daughters have attended Habergham and neither if them see any reason for the changes. I remember Miss Davenport( who had taught my mother and often called me by her name, as did miss Horton who was a neighbour, they were both delightful ladies), Mrs Thornton-games who taught country dancing and MADE you wear your beret out of school, Miss Knapton and Miss Fawcett who taught history and Miss Carney and Mrs Woods and many more. It is sad to see all these schools go. What is happening to all the memorabillia? the wall plaques especially and cups and trophies that generations of pupils have striven to win or be mentioned upon. All three of my daughters also attended Rosehill School, another pointless demolition and rebuild, need I say that they have no faith in th education system in Burnley?

Nazreen
i attented edge end high school between 1993-98. i got together with a group of school friends and we were trying to remember all the names of the teachers that taught then, we struggled. i was hoping if you could send me a list of all the teachers that taught from 1993-98.

Alyson

i am currently still at Habergham High School and i am quite sad that it is closing. i am only in year 8 and i have settled in at Habergham. I dont want to attend the new Hameldon school.

cynthia whear
I attended B.H.S.G. in 1966-67 in the Kiddrow Lane location. I have to laugh at Eileen Berry's comments.Mini skirts were in, so we did the opposite...there was much rebuttoning of gym tunics to make them as short as possible. I told was sternly reprimanded for not having my hair pulled back. As an American from Nebraska (at the time), it was several months before I understand what people were saying to me. We lived in Padiham and I had been told to take the bus & get off at "kiddrow lane"...so when I saw a bus to "Clithroe" I thought it was the correct one & got quite lost. I too remember Miss Davenport.

Nosheen Iqbal
i am currently in year 11 at walshaw high school. it has played a very big part in my life, and i love every moment i have spent here. i dont want to leave. i have great memories here, but if i start putting them down i can go on forever!!

i went to walshaw and it was the best years of my life wish i could turn back the clock getting on the school bus at 8.05 and seeing all yr friends was really great and the 20 mins or so journey was time to catch up on just 17 and smzsh hits and of course boys.

Julie Spedding
I attended Walshaw High School from 1983-1988 and probably like many people, have mixed memories about the place! The teachers mentioned by Susan Wrigley were still there when I attended. I remember what seemed like a long trek up the cinder path on cold winter's day with the wind whipping around our legs - very few people were dropped off by cars/4x4s in those days! I've discovered that there's to be a reunion on Friday 23rd June and so I'll be heading north in order to attend. I believe there's further details available on the friends reunited website. I'm hoping to see some familiar faces there.

Eileen Berry(nee Massey)
I went to B.G.H.S.in 1944,I also remember Miss Davenport and Miss Horton. We shared the building with the Technical College.I remember Miss Fulton ( gymnastics),admonishing me because my long hair was not tied back.If it touched the collar it had to be tied.Gymslips had to be 6inches from the floor when kneeling. As we grew older it was a source of great embarrassment to us. When the New Look came in there was much altering of shoulder buttons on leaving the building, tolengthenthe hemline!

Jean Jones (Hargreaves)
I attended Mansfield in 1952 and did not know there was a bomb shelter beneath the school, it would have been interesting if we had been told.

susan wrigley
Susan Wigley (nee Lawson) I was at walshaw 1965-1969 I have good memories from my time at the school. Miss Waugh was the headmistress,I particulary remember Miss Kay,Miss Webb, and Mr Redman the maths teacher.

lisa Radford

Frank Fenn
I was at Mansfield from 1953-1958, Mr Morton was headmaster, Mr Conse music & 'Tarzan' the arts teacher. I still see some of our era occasionally in town, it wasn't a bad school in those days, the teachers were hard but fair. Our year were the first class to go abroad on holidays (Switzerland) for one week.

Eileen Coates
I spent my freshman year at the Ormerod Road building of Burnley Girls High School. I remember how dark and somewhat depressing the place was. I came by bus from Brierfield. We had to walk across town to a dreary cafeteria on Plumb Street for lunch and it always seemed to be raining. In our second year we moved to a bright, modern building on Kiddrow Lane, almost in Padiham. I remember Miss Davenport, an English teacher, showing us the new library with a cork floor. There were so many rules about behaviour...control detentions for running or being too loud or misbehaving. I did well in English and remember Miss Horton with great respect. She was a fine teacher and I remember so much from her classes. From there grew a love of literature, of reading and an intense curiosity about the world which has served me well in my career as a writer. Best wishes to all members of BGHS Class of 1959!

Kathleen Wilsdon (nee Whittam)
I started at Heasandford in 1955, and my second and subsequent years were at Burnley Technical High School (formerly Towneley). Our year continued to be segregated, and only in 1957 were the first classes mixed. The girls did domestic science or commercial courses and the boys did woodwork and metalwork. I always wanted to do woodwork, but it was only in later years that the courses became interchangeable. I did eventually start doing woodwork - nine years ago!

Andrea Kirby
I attended St Hilda's RC High School from August 1986 until May 1991 it was the best secondary school that I attended.

wendy
i went to edge end high school in the mid 50's i cant believe how much it has changed over the years
