The ghost in the painting

A strange tale of a haunted painting in Accrington, told by Simon Entwistle...

If you make your way to Accrington you will come across a beautiful building known as Springhill House. Some time ago the house was owned by Doreen and Peter Sykes, who purchased the building for the purpose of opening a restaurant.

Doreen was very proud of this lovely听mansion and as a result of her affection, she commissioned a local artist Mr Terry Kirnan to do a painting of the the house in oil paint. He did an excellent job. Doreen and Peter were both very happy with the end result, and had the picture mounted on the dining room wall.

But the painting was unusual. From a short distance if you looked at the top window in the picture you could clearly see a dark grey figure wearing a raincoat looking through the window, but as you advanced toward the picture the character would simply vanish. Around this same time, some very strange events also started to take place in the house...

Doreen's eldest daughter Lesley woke up after she felt a temperature drop in her bedroom. She opened her eyes and was horrified to find an old man at the foot of her bed in a grey raincoat. She screamed and the figure just simply vanished.

A friend of the family, ex-Blackburn Rovers player Neil Wilkinson, who later married Lesley, spent a night in the house where he to found this grey figure lurking at the foot of his bed. Neil had played against some of the toughest players in the country and was frightened of no one, so he jumped out of bed听convinced the house was experiencing a burglary and threw a punch at the grey figure in the raincoat. He hit thin air again the ghost just simply vanished.听

It was only a matter of time before the whole family had come into contact with this ghost and they all described him as an elderly gentleman wearing a coat similar to the ex-prime minister Harold Wilson.

One day Lesley shouted for her mother as she looked at the oil painting in the dining room and she shouted "That's him in the oil painting at the top window, the raincoat and grey shape!" The whole family confirmed this. I have never personally seen the oil painting but must admit the story is one of the best ghost stories I have ever told!
