I went to see local fashion designer, Sarah Locke, whose clothes have recently featured in Italian Vogue. Wow!听 Impressive or what?听 This in mind, I just had to get the low down... So Sarah, let's start with the basics, how did you get into fashion? Well I always new what I wanted to do so leaving school to study textiles at Blackburn college wasn't a huge choice.听 It's something that's always been in the family so I guess it's always been in me to design clothes. Are well designed clothes an art, as some suggest?
Wow!听 Yes well there's a fine line between designers and artists.听 Every designer has to be creative, which, I guess can be defined as artistic... I see myself as a designer rather than an artist though. How would you define your style? Contemporary and directional, and despite the cutting, simple and not too complicated.听 I'd like to think my styles push fashion forward. What is your thought process when designing and creating your pieces? Lot's of research, I live in the library!听 It's a gradual process based on developing ideas from my past collections.听 I'm also open to everything around me, fashion to film, film to political wars. Everything. And finally could you give me some fashion do's and don'ts or fashion tips? Well AJ, you look amazing and if anything, I should be taking fashion advice from you!....(Ok that is a HUGE lie.听 She DID NOT say that at all).听 What she really said was: 1. Do wear something with lurex in winter. Preferably in gold. 2. Do lot's of tailored looks; 3. Do go for the classic shirt; 4. Don't just follow fashion- be yourself and wear what you want; 5. And...(Extremely long pause), always wear lots of white, pale grey and blue in summer. Well what do you think?听 Are well designed clothes art?听 If not, what are they? |
