Tehillah Commission make a stand

Tehillah Commission are a band with a difference. Unlike the majority of their musical peers, the band use their Christianity as a guide to how they conduct themselves both on the stage and off.

A desire to honour

Deriving their name from the Hebrew for 'sing high praise,' The band declare that the motivation behind the band comes from 'a desire to honour and glorify God, using music to express the different experiences faced in life.'

Shaky Beginnings

The band formed in 2003 but faced problems when their keyboard player, Tim, decided that the band was no longer for him. This led to a period where the band 'simply existed as a name.'

In early 2004 the band's lineup became refreshed when guitarist Tyson Sheppard joined the band.

"Tyson is kind of our secret weapon. We were a band before Tyson joined us but we didn't really succeed. Tyson joined us and he's been the thing that spurred us on near greatness," Singer and guitarist Luke Bacon jokes.

A brilliant opportunity

But does being so open about their dedication to Christianity make it difficult to interact with other local musicians?

Drummer Tom Heasman believes that despite being a rarity in the area it does not have to be an issue.

"We really enjoy getting to know other musicians in the area and being able to talk about our faith and play music with other people. It's a brilliant opportunity to make friends and share what we believe."

100 percent Christian

When asked about what kind of impact their faith has on the musical output of the band Luke replies that it is a natural part of themselves.
鈥淲ith any music it is an expression of the self. Each one of us is 100 percent Christian and I guess in that way that our faith in God has an impact on everything we do and say, our conduct at a gig and the songs.鈥

Staying relevant

A year ago Tehillah Commission made the decision to remove 鈥楥hristian鈥 from their list of Myspace genres. This may have appeared to some fans as a reluctance to promote their beliefs, however the band feel their faith is stronger than ever.

鈥淏eing a Christian influences us through and through but sometimes when people see it as a label it influences how they think about you. We鈥檇 turn up at venues and people would be making snide remarks and comments before even they鈥檇 even heard our music.鈥

Tehillah Commission will be appearing over the August bank holiday weekend at music festival Local and Live in Tunbridge Wells.
