Tim spent his first few years in Dover slowly drinking himself into oblivion. He took steps to deal with his alcoholism and hasn't had a drink for the last 12 years.

Tim, by his own admission, has an addictive personality, and the drinking was replaced by addictions to cigarettes and gambling on the horses and playing fruit machines.

Tim feels he has to keep his life in check, and moderate his behaviour to try and be "normal", but everyone, including himself, needs to accept him for what he is.
