Weald of Kent's Wealth

Friday 7th September had me travelling to Penshurst Place to experience the Weald of Kent Craft Show. I was quite overwhelmed with the range of arts, music, and food on offer...

Having been ill for nearly two weeks with mumps, I was hoping my first day back would be a relatively easy one. Little did I know what was in store for me today!

The Weald of Kent Craft Show at Penshurst Place, Tonbridge, was an opportunity for me to see arts and crafts from all over the country, from hand-made jigsaw puzzles to wooden toys and garden statues.

Paper and pencils

On arriving, I was greeted by a man named Jonathan Korejko, who was very willing to give me a demonstration on how to make paper. I was dubious about how hard it could possibly be to make paper, my common use of it being a plain white sheet coming out of a printer or photocopier, but in fact I was taken aback to see quite how intricate making paper can be.听听

My next demonstration was given by Roger Plant, who showed me how a simple twig can be turned into a pencil! I was very happy to be given my own to take home with me as a souvenir.

Walking through the tents at the show, I saw various gifts, from embroidered clothes to rocking horses, hand-made shoes to party bottle stoppers, and forged sculptures to hand-blown glass jewellery.

Food glorious food!

I headed over to the food hall, a tent where all sorts of food and drink were on offer to sample and buy. I helped myself to samples of oils and vinegars, country wines, liqueurs, chocolates, cheeses and sweets, all of which tasted wonderful and which I would have happily bought, if it were not for my student budget!!

After treating myself to a frozen yoghurt, I sat down to listen to some of the music that was being played throughout the day. I was given a taste of some jazz, followed by some clarinet music, which was followed by a xylophone piece!

Brooms, gypsy flowers and lovespoons

As I made my way out of the craft show, I was able to view the site on which the show was taking place, Penshurst Place. The setting was beautiful, a large lake with plenty of greenery, and an extraordinary house in the background. Today had been an experience in itself, and a great chance for me to see the arts, food and music that Kent had to offer.
