BlastYou are in: Kent > Blast > Weird and wonderful! Weird and wonderful!By Megan Affonso Tuesday 14th August saw me visiting Broadstairs Folk Week. Following the summer weather we鈥檇 had over the past couple of weeks, today鈥檚 skies did not look so promising. I was sure spending the day by the beach wouldn鈥檛 help matters. Broadstairs Folk Week brings thousands of visitors to the small town, and despite the bad weather, today was no exception, as there were all kinds of people present: families, couples, groups of teenagers, and the elderly too. One thing that struck me about Broadstairs was the amount of people walking around with bells attached to their knees. I wasn鈥檛 entirely sure whether I鈥檇 stumbled upon a different country and culture completely, or whether this was just due to the festival taking place, as there were Morris dancers everywhere I looked. Arts and craftsI decided to have a peek at the Craft Fair that was taking place, with all kinds of hand made pieces and clothes for sale. The smell of incense was in the air, along with the sound of wind chimes, and the Craft Fair had a very earthy feel to it. From hand made instruments and Russian Dolls to carved wooden sculptures and hand knitted clothes, the Craft Fair supplied a variety of interesting gifts, and I truly felt that I had experienced a different culture completely. My cultural experience did not end here: As I walked further along the beach, I was entertained by some folk musicians who had taken it upon themselves to sit on a bench and start playing. My knowledge of classical music was no help here, as the musicians were playing on instruments like none that I had ever seen before! Mad hatters?Walking further still along the promenade, I could hear music and shouting in the background. I followed the sounds until I arrived to find a crowd gathered around some Morris dancers. It was at this point that I felt I was in a different world completely: The dancers wore colourful costumes that made them look like Mad Hatters, and danced to the tunes and words of nursery rhymes. This was the highlight of the day, as the energy of the performers shone through the bleak weather. The wind and rain persevered, and saw a drop in the number of entertainers and people to watch their acts. I decided it was time to go home, and though the weather hadn鈥檛 been at its best, the insight I had into the Folk culture was enough to make up for it. last updated: 20/08/07 |
