Society has a habit of viewing Traveller children as something of a problem. Disruptive and under-achieving, they are shunned from schools who don't know how to cope; misunderstood and mistrusted, they are at best marginalised but at worst physically bullied or verbally abused.
Angie: "They need to be proud of who they are." As with other disenfranchised minorities, conflict with mainstream society can largely be explained by ignorance. For those that are excluded from schools but don't know why, or who feel marginalised and threatened but feel powerless to respond, there are volunteers working hard to instill a sense of cultural pride - and to confront the ignorance of others.
This is where people like Blue and his mum Angie come in. Angie's father Joe is a Romany Gypsy while her mother is an Irish Traveller. Joe founded the Youth Division, an organisation set up to help young Gypsies and Travellers find out about their culture and take this knowledge into their schools and colleges. Angie is now secretary, coordinator and child protection officer at the Youth Division and is determined to build a better world for her children. Blue: "We're giving Travellers a chance in school" Blue, at 13, is already a community activist. He is one of the youngest members of the UK Youth Parliament and is on a mission to nip discrimination against Gypsies and Travellers in the bud - starting a new diversity club at his school, attending conferences around the country and challenging MPs. Read some of Blue's poems: The Youth Division has recently set up two youth club nights - one in Canterbury and one in Sittingbourne. These are places where Traveller children of all ages can go to be themselves - free from suspicion and free to learn about their culture, before taking this knowledge back to sceptical society and telling their story in their own words.
