In all, Ebbsfleet Valley is divided into nine development zones, to be set around 390 acres of parks, lakes and woodland areas. As well as 10,000 new homes, transport links, schools, medical centres, offices, shops and leisure and community facilities are all being created from scratch.

It's hoped the site will also create up to 20,000 new office jobs and developers have committed to sourcing skills and employees from the local area wherever possible.

Where is it?

Bordered by the A2, Bluewater, Greenhithe, Swanscombe and Northfleet. Located next to the new Ebbsfleet International station.

When is it happening?

Work began at Springhead Park, the first phase of Ebbsfleet Valley, in 2006. The first houses were completed in March 2008, but Ebbsfleet Valley will take between 20-25 years to develop as a whole. Ebbsfleet International station opened in November 2007. The new high speed commuter service from Ebbsfleet to St. Pancras will start in December 2009. Advanced preview services are already running.

History

Clay was first extracted by hand in the early 1900s. Chalk excavation began in the 1930s and was transported by rail to nearby Swanscombe cement works via a network of tunnels. Both the QEII Bridge and parts of the Channel Tunnel were built using cement from Eastern Quarry.

The numbers

  • About 10,000 homes
  • The creation of about 20,000 new jobs
  • Ebbsfleet Valley is a 1,035 acre site, the size of 552 football pitches
  • It would take 16,760,000 people standing together to fill Ebbsfleet Valley
  • Ebbsfleet Valley is 3 times the size of Hyde Park
  • Ebbsfleet Valley will provide over 17 million sq ft of residential, employment, retail and leisure facilities
  • The quarry has chalk cliffs up to 180 feet high - as tall as 10 double-decker buses
