Jersey 1973

By Ryan Morrison
In Life on Mars Sam Tyler found himself in Manchester 1973. We want to know what Jersey was like back then…

The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ’s time travelling series about a detective who finds himself in 1973, Life on Mars, returns to ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ ONE on Tuesday 13 February 2007.

To mark its return we thought we take a look at our own little corner of the globe and what Jersey was like back in 1973.

In partnership with ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Jersey’s Breakfast show with Joe Pignatiello we thought we’d take a look at the stories making the news 34 years ago.

Headlines, diaries and television aside though, what we really want to know is what you, your older siblings or even your parents were doing in 1973.

Gale force winds blow mail boat across harbour

Winds gusting to gale force on 27 September led to a quick change of plan as the mail boat Caesarea was docking. The ship was being blown across the harbour towards the old harbour so the skipper decided not to fight it and berthed the huge boatÌý on theÌý New North Quay.

There was also an extremely low tide which didn't help matters. This led to the car ferry Falaise having to spend the night in St Aubin's bay.Ìý

Bus fares to rise by 1p

The Jersey Motor Transport Company planned to increase all fares by 1 pence which meant the fare would rise to between 5p and 17p.

Jersey's defence committee was to be asked to allow the increases from the end of May in this particular year. The company wanted the school bus fare of 2p to stay the same and there was a scholar’s fare of 3p which would stay the same.

New disco

Behan's at West Park, which replaced the Pavilion, was extended to accommodate a new disco. This meant Behans had a new capacity for a thousand people making it the largest entertainment centre in the island. The extension cost £20 thousand.
