JEFFREY HODGSON - THE SEARCH FOR ANSWERS

Jeffrey Hodgson
Jeffrey Hodgson's body was found in 2002

Jeffrey Hodgson was 38 when he disappeared in Ibiza, but he had the mental age of an eight year old. When Jeffrey鈥檚 body was found, it should have been an end to a tragic story for his family. But it was the beginning of a mystery.

Jeffrey vanished while his parents Beryl and Derek Hodgson checked into their hotel in the resort of Calla Llonga in July 2001.

The Spanish police鈥檚 intensive search for Jeffrey only lasted three days. In the months that followed it was scaled down.

Beryl says, "Jeffrey was never searched for as a child and that鈥檚 exactly what he was in his mind, he was a man in his body, but he was a child in his mind."

Beryl says, "We realised that if nobody else was going to be searching we needed to do it."

Jeffrey鈥檚 family and friends distributed more than 100,000 posters of Jeffrey.

They had to rely on their own fund raising events to pay for repeated trips back to Ibiza.

Derek says, "Its been a bit like a do it yourself search right from the beginning with no assistance hardly from the police and the authorities.

Despite several reported sightings of Jeffrey, their attempts to get an intensive search renewed by the Spanish and British Governments failed.

Mystery

Jeffrey鈥檚 body was discovered by two German climbers walking in a thickly wooded clifftop area. It was just a few kilometres from the hotel where he went missing.

The Spanish police told the devastated family Jeffrey must have found his own way to the remote spot. His death was a tragic accident, rather than suspicious.

The family find it hard to believe that Jeffrey could have climbed up the rough, rocky track and then begun a steep descent down the mountainside through thick scrubland.

Derek says, "He鈥檚 handicapped, he鈥檇 no coordination with his hands and his feet as such."

"He couldn鈥檛 get up the stairs at Maine Road when I used to take him to the football without me having to support him."

Instead of grieving for him, Jeffrey鈥檚 family now find themselves trying to solve the mystery of how Jeffrey came to be there.

They went back to the island a few weeks ago to make a film of the route Jeffrey鈥檚 supposed to have taken. This brought up more questions than answers.

Derek says, "We were lead to believe there were no specs of blood on him. When we cam back out legs were cut to ribbons."

"We had gashes and cuts all over us and pine needles sticking our of our trainers and clothing."

Beryl says, "His Stockport County shirt, which is a silky shirt, would be pulled all over it and it isn't."

There鈥檚 no date been fixed yet for an inquest, which will be held in Stockport, to establish the cause of Jeffrey鈥檚 death.

The family hope it will finally help to solve the mystery of what really did happen to Jeffrey.
