Sustainable London ...
Final instalment

Just how easy is it to go green?

The Murray family has been challenged to do just that for three months by cutting their carbon emissions in half.

Inside Out London has been tracking their progress and the Murray's are now ready to have their environmentally friendly barbeque, present their homegrown garden salad and find out whether they have beaten their challenge.

"Being a mum of two boys I am concerned about the future, so I think we've done quite well," said Stella.

Samantha Heath from the London Sustainability Exchange has helped them on their way.

At the start of the trial, she gave them an electrisave that calculates how much electricity they are using at one time.

"It's fabulous, we know what we're doing and what we're burning and it's actually started to effect the way we're living," said Martin Murray.

Stella is proud of her wormery, where her scrapings, pasta and bread go, "it has a smell, but it is actually quite a pleasant smell".

The fluid from the wormery will be used in the vegetable patch.

Overall, the Murray's exceeded their target carbon emissions, with a 52kg to 23kg reduction of CO2 emissions a day.

How did they do this?

Through recycling, using a wormery, a small compost box, reducing their weekly rubbish, cutting their car use dramatically, saving electricity and installing a condensing boiler.

"I thought we were reasonably aware prior to this and I've realised just what a difference it can make if you just think about what you're doing," said Martin.

Constructing Clissold: over budget and overdue

Clissold Leisure centre
Clissold Leisure Centre: Under construction

Hackney residents were promised a state of the art millennium project leisure centre.

Thirteen years later and 拢43m over the original budget Clissold Leisure Centre remains a construction site.

For the first time Stephen Hodder, the acclaimed architect, admits mistakes were made.

In an exclusive interview, Karl Mercer speaks with Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney, who admits 'lots went wrong with Hackney Clissold'.

In 1993, Hackney Council set 拢2m and a completion date of 2000 for Clissold Leisure Centre.

In 1998 the estimation went to 拢8m and then when Stephen Hodder, award winning architect was employed the price was raised to 拢12m, six times the original price.

Cracks appeared

In 2002, the centre was open to the public. Soon cracks appeared in the architecture.

The roof was not suitable and water began leaking from it, the pool was not easily accessible to toddlers and disabled people, the changing rooms were not private enough and in November 2003, Clissold Centre was once again under construction.

Three years later the leisure centre remains surrounded by scaffolding.

"We needed more time to actually really evaluate whether or not the savings that were needed were attainable and by now we're on site, trying to work with a contractor, put up a building and trying to make the savings at the same time," said Hodder.

The problems have cost every Hackney household the equivalent of 拢500.

Its estimated repairs will cost 拢13m raising the overall price to 拢45m.

Inside Out London speaks with Hackney residents on how this has affected their lives and to council members on why this project is still not completed.

Clissold Leisure Centre was due to open this year, but has been postponed again to 2007.

Royal Restoration: Inside Fulham Palace

Fulham Palace
Fulham Palace - undergoing an 拢8m restoration

Inside Out London explores Fulham Palace as it undergoes an 拢8m restoration.

Due to open on November the 9th, this 18th century architectural gem has lain hidden away in the heart of London and was previously occupied by the Bishops of London right up until 1973.

Buildings decayed

Situated by the Thames it has beautiful gardens, a museum, a chapel and has been attracting those in the know for years.

Since the 1970's much of the building has fallen into disrepair and many of the rooms were out of bounds to the public, but all this is about to change.

Scott Cooper, the man behind the transformation, speaks with Inside Out London's Maxwell Hutchinson about how he wants Fulham Palace to become a star attraction on London's tourist map.

The restoration, which began last August includes the complete refurbishment of the Georgian East quadrangle.

The Heritage Lottery fund has donated 拢3 million to the project which will include a new contemporary photography gallery, a caf茅 staged as a Bishops' drawing room from a 1700s painting and a fully restored Bishop Sherlock's room, which dating from 1750 will be the heritage heart of the revamped Fulham Palace.

A marvellous rococo ceiling has lain hidden for 40 years in The Bishop Sherlock's room, and when it was discovered under a false ceiling, part of it actually fell down.

Trevor Kenny is a plaster specialist whose job is to restore the ceiling:

"It's like a large jigsaw puzzle, once you can get pieces back together in some kind of order. In this day and age everything is so smooth and linear, but this is beauty."

The extensive land around Fulham Palace is also being restored to its 18th century glory. Much of this is done by volunteers from the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.

"I enjoy it, it keeps me physically fit and I get to work in the open," said Archie Linson, one of the volunteers.

The renovation is supported by the local heritage associations and is something which local residents are looking forward to.

"I think it would be hugely successful.

"It's great to see lottery money spent on something that's an important part of heritage", said one resident.
