The campaign to abolish the slave trade is the prototype of the successful human rights campaign. It pioneered the use of many advocacy tools that we now take for granted, including investigative research, parliamentary lobbying, media work, consumer boycotts, judicial challenges, the single-issue campaign, branding and merchandising.
This gallery explores some of the tools used by the abolitionists to gain public support for the anti-slavery movement in the 1780s and how they are still used today.
